Well first, we have to define DESIGN, the thing about design is that it has numerous forms, Communication Design ( print, web, advertise and such), Interior Design, Equipment Design, Ergonomic Design, all are very different between them today, but they were all born from the same “House”.

The person designing is called a designer, which is also a term used for people who work professionally in one of the various design areas, usually also specifying which area is being dealt with (such as a fashion designer, concept designer or web designer). Designing often requires a designer to consider the aesthetic, functional, and many other aspects of an object or a process, which usually requires considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design.

Even tough I’ve only been in Design a few years, i saw it evolve, today i feel that Design turned much more technological, by this i mean that, before in the old day, Design was never defined as Art, because a Designed object has a function, and Art don’t, the only purpose of Art is to look good ( by this i mean feel good about it, i don’t want to go deeper into  the definition of beauty right now, Aristoteles tried and failed ), but today, i feel that Designers today use technologies, creating some code, that makes a random movie that syncs with music and call it design, well that is wrong, is more Art than design because it is open to interpretation and Design is not.

Technological vs Manual

We live in the future, if you told someone 15 years ago that we would be walking outside, calling friends to another coutry trough a gizmo of the size of your hands people would call you crazy, and we have evolved these last 50 years faster than we did the last 500 years.

So it’s only fair that designer use the technologies available to himself, and today there is not one single designer that don’t use a mac erm.. i mean a personal computer, but a lot of them get stuck in it, and don’t release them selfs from it, “getting outside of the box” phrase, this sometimes derives to lack of creativity, if a designer is stuck inside the computer all day and get inspirations only from the internet and tv, most probably will the designer create something already done before, or very similiar, that’s why thinking outside the box is important.

This means that designers should spend more time using a pen and paper, walking to new places in town, think about things, ( i usually take pictures of stuff and from my Iphone is enough ) without being influenced by “fashions”, the best fashion is the one that you start and turns out good, a lot of web pages are grungy style, before was the glossy style and so on, and pretty much soon there will be another style that everyone will want to use in their design.

A good designer will make a good job, a great one will make one even better.

Do what nobody else has done, go wherever nobody has gone before, become someone people will look up to, just like you look up to someone.
